Good readers make connections while reading.
Kinds of Connections
1. Text to self: to own experiences and memories
2. Text to world: to facts and information about history, current events, the world
3. Text to text: to other stories, songs, TV shows, movies, etc.
Reasons to Make Connections
Making connections helps readers:
- Visualize.
- Listen to others to see how they are connecting to the text, thus enrichingeveryone’s understanding of the material.
- Read more actively—with a purpose—which reduces boredom and increasesattention.
- Remember what they read since it has become personalized.
- Ask questions.
- Relate to characters by understanding their feelings and motivations.
What You Can Do
- Create a Venn diagram to show how subject areas overlap and how they differ, or to bridge information between textbook chapters or linked novels.
- Look at the topic of study. Write the facts you know about the subject
- Model your thinking by sharing the connections you make while reading.
- Identify similarities between subjects you study.
Example Connecting Statements
- This part reminds me of....
- I felt like...(character) when I....
- If that happened to me I would....
- This book reminds me of...(another text) because....
- I can relate to...(part of text) because one time....
- Something similar happened to me when....

Connection:
This reminds me of all the times I have said something about someone - not realizing that they were there! People have a tendency to speak without thinking. Sometimes I forget to think about what I am going to say, who might hear me, and who I might hurt!

In the year of the Bull-
pg. 112. Dennis embraced his role as a rebounder on this team. I made a text to self connection from that passage because I know people who play basketball who are excactly like that. They get very little credit. However, they never complain about there job.

i just finished my independent reading book. Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. it was a great story it just had a very twist to the end. you would never suspect how the strory ends up finishing. The main girl in the story ended up being the one who shot her boyfriend. not peter. it was intense

page 117. "Stand still. Do nothing. Listn to the deepest deepest places of the dark."
This always reminds me to listen to what others may not think is there, to read for what others might have missed. I made a text to self connection to this page. I now dont only hear darkness; I hear what is in those darkest of places.
In the book "Fire", he is at the camp and doesnt know anybody, he looks around and sees people doing their own thing until some people come over and sit next to him, so he starts talking to them and asking them stuff about what's going on.
Thats kind of like when i first whent to school, i didnt know anybody and was kinda nervous until some kids came and sat next to me and we became friends
